Based on the bestselling book by Georgia’s own Margaret Mitchell, the famous film, was shot in three-strip Technicolor and may be cinema’s greatest historical epic film of the Old South during wartime. With a star-studded cast of Clark Gable, Vivien Leigh, Leslie Howard, Olivia de Havilland, and Hattie McDaniel, it tells a timeless tale of a love-hate romance, as well as survival during massive upheaval. Scarlett O’Hara struggles to find love and identity during the Civil War and Reconstruction in the American South.
It was produced by David O. Selznick and directed by Victor Fleming, from a screenplay by Sidney Howard. The film received ten Academy Awards (eight competitive, two honorary), a record that stood for 20 years. The film runs 3 hours and 44 minutes, with a 15-minute intermission.
Mammy: Savannah would be better for ya. You’d just get in trouble in Atlanta.
Scarlett: What trouble are you talking about?
Mammy: You know what trouble I’s talkin’ ’bout. I’s talking ’bout Mr. Ashley Wilkes. He’ll be comin’ to Atlanta when he gets his leave, and you sittin’ there waitin’ for him, just like a spider. He belongs to Miss Melanie…
